There are so many organisations participating in Mandela Day, internationally and locally. Mandela Day is being marked across the country, with plenty of events in Cape Town and other cities. But Johannesburg and Pretoria will also be taking initiative on Monday 18 July. Take a look at what Gauteng’s organisations have got planned…

Break a World Record with Ladles of Love

Ladles of Love’s charity efforts of giving soup to the homeless began in Cape Town and now have blossomed into a variety of programmes taking place throughout the country.

This Mandela Day, Ladles of Love aims to raise over R3 million to provide food to people in poverty-stricken communities. They’re making a giant mosaic of Nelson Mandela in Cape Town but they certainly haven’t forgotten about Gauteng!

They plan to create the South African Flag in Johannesburg by calling out to you, individuals, families and corporate companies. They’re attempting to break the world record for the largest mosaic made out of food cans.

You can donate food cans to contribute or book a slot to actively participate in breaking the World Record.

Experience the South African Guide-Dogs Association

“This Mandela Month we are offering an exclusive experience with our Assistance Dogs and O&M practitioners where you can experience 67 minutes in the shoes of a visually impaired person,” says Yolande van Rooyen, Events Manager at the South Africa Guide-Dogs Association.

Yolande goes on to say that their aim is to raise R67 000 in order to provide their clients with the assistive devices and training needed to make their dreams come true.

Many South Africans may be familiar with the South African Guide-Dog Association as a provider of guide dogs to the visually impaired. However, many people are still unaware of the Association’s other life-changing services, such as providing guide dogs for the blind and service dogs to people with physical disabilities, autism support dogs to children on the autism spectrum, and teaching people who are visually impaired how to use a long cane and other daily life skills.

This Mandela Day, the organisation will give volunteers the experience of being in the shoes of a visually impaired person.

Walk in the Shoes of the Visually Impaired, with a Guide Dog by Your Side

Join The Johannesburg Children’s Home for a Day of Fun and Giving Back

The Johannesburg Children’s Home, which is celebrating 130 years since its establishment, is hosting an open day. With a variety of things to do, this is surely one of the most hands-on Mandela Day 2022 events in Gauteng!

There will be an exhibition of the children’s art that is for sale and a stall available of the bottled products from their kitchen. Other activities like painting, gardening, helping with chores, purchasing from their tuckshop or making donations.

“We still want to honour Madiba’s legacy,” says managing director Annette Brokensha. “And we still feel that is a very valid space in our society for people to emulate his lifestyle and to be passionate about giving back and especially to children, which was his passion.”

Do It For the Love of Babies!

Established in 2020, For the Love of Babies packages baby essentials made up with love for mothers and children.

“My main goal with the charity was to make sure each mom and baby we help know that they are important, they are someone and that they matter! They need to know that their children are blessings and they have a responsibility to care for and love them,” says founder Mart-Marie Uys Terblanche.

For the Love of Babies’ first goal is to secure donations of nappies, new clothes and educational toys. Sponsors are also invited to be part of the cause as they hope to host a fun carnival party to celebrate the moms and babies.
